②Around ages 18-22:
Osaka Institute of Technology was right next door,
but I couldn't attend (due to poor grades) and instead chose to get a job.
Looking back, I wanted to study mechanical engineering.
I still didn't know what path I wanted to take.
Nippon Steel Transportation, a subsidiary of Nippon Steel, had its headquarters
in Kokura, Kyushu, and at the time had only 500 new employees. Nippon Steel
Transportation was responsible for transporting steel (within the steelworks)
and providing maintenance and repairs.
My induction ceremony was held at Nippon Steel's headquarters. I was assigned
to the Nippon Steel Sakai Works in Sakai City. Here, I learned the fundamentals
of steelmaking.
I learned how steel is made and the manufacturing process from the ground
up.
I learned things I wouldn't have learned even if I had gone to university.
For the first six months of my employment, I was constantly studying, and
I even wondered if I was really getting paid for something like that.
The Sakai Works had two blast furnaces, but one had already shut down.
This steelworks produces items such as train rails, steel car wheels, and
hot coils used to make car bodies. Hot coils are made by heating large
steel bars in an electric furnace until they reach 1200 degrees, at which
point they leave the furnace and are placed on a hot coil line. The line
is about 2 kilometers long. At the end, the hot coil is wound up at 0.6
mm. The final winding speed is said to be 200 kilometers per hour. However,
sometimes the winding goes wrong and the workplace becomes hellish. I have
also been forced to clean up afterwards.
No final, a bobina quente é enrolada a 0,6 mm. A velocidade
No entanto,
Now, after six months, your assignment is decided. Freight cars run inside
the steelworks.
They are similar to JR locomotives, with a 120,000cc diesel engine, 12
in-line cylinders and pistons nearly 30cm long. They are turbocharged,
four-valve engines. The turbochargers were taller than I was.
Employees are divided into locomotive and freight car workers. I wanted
to work with the locomotives but was assigned to freight car maintenance.
This department handles the overhaul and repair of freight cars other than
locomotives. Grease is replaced. Cracks in the bogies are repaired by carving
a V-shape into the top plate, which is about 120mm thick. A device called
a gouging machine is used for this process; a perforated carbon rod is
applied 200V and brought into contact with the cracked steel plate. When
compressed air is passed through the holes in the rod, it creates a short
circuit, melting the iron, and the molten part is blown away with the compressed
air. The problem was the flying iron, which sometimes got into my back.
It was so hot I writhed in agony. It took a day to dig a 30-centimeter
hole. Seeing a 1-meter crack was mind-boggling. After digging a V-shape,
the next step was to fill it with welding. This machine uses a semi-automatic
carbon dioxide welding machine. Welding rods about 0.8 mm thick are dispensed
automatically, but the work doesn't progress very quickly. The molten iron
is transported in freight cars called torpedo cars, which also have gearboxes
at the front and rear, and the grease is replaced periodically. The amount
is enormous. There are about two drums. When I stepped inside the gearbox,
I was knee-deep in grease. For some reason, I was good at welding. Even
though I'd just joined the company, I was already the best. My team leader
told me to get a qualification for welding on ships, but I was already
planning on quitting. I worked there for 11 months, but I think the reason
I left was the environment at Sakai Steel Works.
A graxa é substituída.
A quantidade
There were many people in their late 40s, and no young people. When I submitted
my resignation letter to the director, he scolded me, saying it was just
a "resignation letter," and that I was no good at anything. He
hurled verbal abuse at me, saying I couldn't do anything. I was right to
quit. I tried taking the university entrance exam. 90% of my classmates
went to Osaka Institute of Technology or other universities. I studied
almost overnight and took the exam. I ended up with questions that I hadn't
studied for, thinking they wouldn't come up. I eventually applied to the
Osaka Prefecture Vocational Training School's automotive department, and
when I told the interviewer, "I want to be a racing mechanic,"
he scolded me and told me to find another job. I thought I'd failed, but
I was actually attending. That interviewer would become my teacher. I attended
the school diligently, not missing a single day, and received an award
for perfect attendance. Upon graduating from this training school, I was
eligible to take the automotive mechanic exam. I passed the national certification
exams for Class 3 Automobile Engine, Class 3 Automobile Diesel, and Class
3 Automobile Chassis.
Acabei me
Classe 3.
I then applied to Osaka Toyopet, but when asked what 1 horsepower meant
during the interview, I replied, "It's the power of one horse,"
and was rejected. "The horse has nothing to do with it." In the
old days, people considered the power of one horse to be 1 horsepower.
It wasn't wrong, but... Osaka Toyopet would later market itself as racing.
Next, I applied to Osaka Toyota and was accepted. They were one of 200
new recruits. Apparently, half of that number would be cut in a year. Osaka
Toyota was assigned to the Sakai Sales Office as a service worker. It felt
like a very strict military environment. Younger colleagues would call
me by my first name, and I didn't mind, but I thought I'd get my revenge
someday. However, there were also considerate people. I was driving a Corona
Hardtop 1800SL, and everyone asked me why I didn't get a 2000GT. My dad
bought it when my older brother turned 18. I'm going to tune this car.
First, I put in aluminum wheels and 185 radial tires. It finally started
to run straight. Next, I got a SOLEX carburetor, which has different shapes
on the left and right. Getting the two carburetors to sync up was a challenge.
The spark plugs were always black and wet. Whenever I had time, I would
tune and set them up every day. Then I bought an early Mark II engine from
a nearby junkyard for 12,000 yen. Toyota has many common parts to cut costs,
and the engine mounts and transmissions are compatible. Here, I made a
mistake by choosing an 1850cc instead of a 2000cc. It should have been
cheaper. "Cheap things have a reason, expensive things have a history."
And so I ended up driving a Corona 2000GT ghost.
havia pessoas atenciosas.
A Toyota
One day, on the Rinkai Line, three of my classmates, all bratty, pulled
alongside me at a traffic light in a Celica 1600GT. They were yelling something.
It was a traffic light grand prix. I was one guy on one side, and they
were three. Under the same conditions, the Celica 1600GT was slightly faster.
The light changed, and immediately there was a left turn. I took the inside.
I pulled away. I tuned three of my senior's cars. Since I had Sundays off,
I swapped engines on my senior's cars and made a bunch of ghosts. It was
a lot of fun, and it's a great memory. This happened when I was about 20
years old. Around that time, Toyota announced the Cresta. They established
a sales network called the Toyota Vista Dealership. "Yes, let me go
to Vista," I said, and I only stayed at Osaka Toyota for a year. I
didn't think there was anything to gain from that sales office. I was seconded
to the Vista Dealership and then transferred. The Cresta had something
called a cruise control computer, but no one knew how to operate it. I
bought one with an employee discount and was able to operate the cruise
control perfectly. Looking back, it was child's play. Anyway, there were
no employees who could explain how to operate the system to customers.
At the time, I was working at the head office, but I was busy explaining
the cruise computer. A senior executive saw me there, and I was assigned
one subordinate and sent there as a service worker. My sales target was
500,000 yen. The other sales offices had a section manager and five subordinates,
and they had a sales target of 5 million yen, but not only did I achieve
this 500,000 yen target right from the start, I ended up selling 2 million
yen. That's if I had a lot of good customers. At my peak, I sold 6 million
yen a month. This also led to people being jealous.
sinal abriu e imediatamente houve uma curva à esquerda. Peguei a parte
de dentro. Arranquei. Tunava três carros do meu veterano.
Naquela época, a Toyota anunciou
o Cresta.
Toyota Vista. "Sim, deixe-me ir para a Vista", eu disse, e fiquei
Um executivo sênior me viu lá, e me designaram um subordinado e me enviaram
para lá como um trabalhador de serviço. Minha meta de vendas era de 500.000
ienes.
No meu auge,
vendi 6 milhões de ienes por mês. Isso também causou inveja nas pessoas.
I also did some memorable things. The first time was when I was riding
my motorcycle and saw a 125cc single-cylinder motorcycle parked on the
sidewalk, looking like it was having some trouble. I stopped and asked
him what was wrong. "The engine's stalled, and gasoline's leaking
from the carburetor." Figuring it would be easy to remove a carburetor,
I took out a screwdriver and removed the carburetor. I removed the float
cap, which keeps the gasoline at a constant level. There's a valve there,
and when I removed it, I found a large piece of debris stuck in it. I explained
to him that the problem was that some debris had gotten in the gasoline
and clogged it, causing the engine and gasoline to leak. He seemed incredibly
surprised. He asked for my address, but I didn't have anything to write
on it, so I put a copy of my driver's license in it, and gave it to him.
He sent me a New Year's card over the New Year, which said, "I felt
like God had helped me at that time, and I'll study hard and become like
you."
motor morreu e a gasolina está vazando do carburador." Imaginando
Ele pareceu incrivelmente surpreso.
e entreguei a ele.
The second story happened when I was at the Toyota Vista Sumiyoshi store.
Early one morning, a woman came into the store with a pale face. "I
locked my car in the hospital parking lot with my baby inside, without
realizing the keys were still inside," she said. I grabbed a box of
tools and headed to the parking lot of the prefectural hospital across
the street. There was a crowd of about 100 people there. When I looked
at the car door lock, I saw that it had been broken into, so I could easily
unlock it, but I didn't want anyone to see me. The mother was half-delirious.
"Okay, everyone, can you please turn around until I say yes?"
I said, and the moment I opened the door, she asked me, "How much
is it?" I replied, "I'm not getting paid for this," turned
around, and headed back to the store. The crowd applauded, and I returned
to the store without looking back. The only people who knew about this
were the office girl and me. Apparently, the next day, when I wasn't there,
the mother came by with a cake to thank me. I didn't eat it. Nishida-san
(the office girl), where did that cake go? I still think about that cake.
visse. A mãe estava meio delirante.
me perguntou: "Quanto é?".
A multidão aplaudiu e eu voltei
para a loja sem olhar para trás. As únicas pessoas que sabiam disso eram
a recepcionista e eu.
I had just turned 22 when I was dumped by my girlfriend of two years. The
wind was blowing the song "22-year-old farewell" on the streets.
Around this time, Daicel (Fujifilm's parent company) in Sakai had an explosion.
The mushroom cloud was clearly visible. The roads were jammed, and I went
to the scene on my motorcycle (CBX400F). On my way back, I went straight
ahead, and a car waiting to turn right was talking to a girl in the passenger
seat, causing a head-on collision that sent me flying nearly 10 meters.
Fortunately, I only suffered some scratches, but my bike was a total loss,
so I decided to buy a new one. The insurance company told me they didn't
want the wrecked bike, so I could do whatever I wanted with it. So I brought
the wrecked bike to my apartment and began modifying it for racing.
O vento soprava a música "22-year-old farewell"
